Licensing

SMF uses two open licenses, one for the framework and one for the code.

Part of the repository License File
Framework and documentation: README.md, docs/, templates/, and other Markdown files at the root Creative Commons Attribution 4.0 International (CC BY 4.0) LICENSE-docs
Reference specification, schemas, examples and tools: everything under reference/, plus .github/ workflows Apache License 2.0 LICENSE
Website build: site/build.py, mkdocs.yml and the build requirements Apache License 2.0 LICENSE
Website content and styling: site/home.md, site/assets/, and the assistant starter prompt in prompts/ CC BY 4.0 LICENSE-docs

What this means in practice

  • Using the framework. You may use, adapt, translate, teach and build on SMF, including commercially, for consulting or in products, as long as you credit it. Suggested attribution: "Semantic Management Framework (SMF) by Alexander Nykolaiszyn and SMF contributors, licensed under CC BY 4.0."
  • Using the reference code and schemas. You may use, modify and redistribute them under Apache-2.0, which includes a patent grant. Keep the LICENSE and NOTICE files with any redistribution.
  • Using your own Semantic Contracts. Metric Contracts, Definition Contracts and other artifacts you write with the templates belong to you. The licenses cover the framework and templates, not your organization's content.

The name

The licenses cover the content, not the name. "Semantic Management Framework" and "SMF" identify this project. Please don't imply endorsement or certification by the project without permission. A formal naming and trademark policy is on the roadmap.

Contributions

Contributions are accepted under the same license as the part of the repository they change (docs under CC BY 4.0, code and schemas under Apache-2.0). See CONTRIBUTING.md.
